International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists (IAARS) was formed in 1980 and is believed to be the oldest of its kind dealing with collective experience in motor vehicle accident reconstruction. One of the unique features of IAARS participation is peer review of submitted material for acceptance at various levels of membership. This organization has continuously worked to provide professional training and education in accident reconstruction for members and non-members.

The IAARS leadership is comprised of a President, Vice-President and Board of Directors. IAARS leadership is comprised of experienced reconstructionists who have reconstructed numerous collisions in the course of their careers. Meet our leadership below.

Eino “Butch” Thompson

President

About Eino

Mr. Thompson was a Massachusetts State Police Officer for 34 years and a reconstructionist since 1986. He was assigned to the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section – Western Team since 1992 and supervised the Western Team since 1998. He has been the lead investigator in over 800 reconstructions as well as assisted other members in their investigations. Mr. Thompson is presently retired as of December 13th and is doing private practice.

Peter Murphy

About Peter

Mr. Murphy has been a member of IAARS since 1989 and is the owner of Interstate Accident Reconstruction Consultants. Mr. Murphy retired from the Massachusetts State Police in December 2008 after 34 years of service. He has instructed in all levels of traffic accident investigation to police officers in Massachusetts. He has also lectured at the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology (IPTM) Special Problems Seminars, International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists and for private corporations. He also has published works in the areas of highway safety and crash reconstruction.

Mr. Murphy is certified by the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR # 259).

Stephen Benanti

Mr. Benanti has been a member of IAARS since 1986; he is ACTAR accredited and is also the IAARS alternate to ACTAR.He is a 25 year veteran of the Massachusetts State Police and retired with the rank of Lieutenant in September of 2004. Mr. Benanti began reconstructing accidents for the MSP in May of 1984 and was later the Commanding Officer of the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

Mr. Benanti has also been reconstructing accidents in the private sector since 1986.

Richard Kimball

About Richard

Richard Kimball has been a member of IAARS since 1984.  He is a 25-year veteran of law enforcement in South Carolina, where he coordinated accident reconstruction units in the Traffic Divisions of the Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.  He retired from law enforcement in 2000 and currently consults on accident reconstruction cases in the private sector.

Dave Herzuck

About Dave

David Herzuck is a 1982 Bachelor of Science graduate of the Winona State University Paralegal Program. He has 22 years of practical experience in preparing civil actions for the courtroom from both the plaintiff and defense perspective and has lectured at seminars for Winona State University, MADD and the Minnesota Trial Lawyer’s Association.

Dave also has been an active member of IAARS since 1990 and was elected to the Board in 2004.

Dave Sanford

About Dave

Dave Sanford has been employed by the Massachusetts State Police since 1988; he is a senior trooper and has been posted to the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section as a Collision Reconstruction Specialist since 2001. Previous to his assignment to CARS, Dave was posted to the Springfield Barracks, Troop B, and rode the south patrol. In addition to investigating and reconstructing over four hundred collisions, Dave has assisted his fellow team mates with their investigations, and has been the lead field training officer for newly posted reconstruction specialists on the western team. Further, he has assisted in the instruction of trainees at the local police academy, and has also assisted in the instruction of police officers in basic accident investigation. Dave has earned ACTAR accreditation (#1637). He participates in continuing education that allows him to master the latest technology, techniques, and research available in collision reconstruction and related fields.

Dan Lofgren

Dan Lofgren is a Former Minnesota State Trooper and currently is President of Lofgren Associates, Inc., a traffic accident reconstruction firm based in Princeton, Minnesota.

Mr. Lofgren has been a member of  IAARS since 1981, previously serving as a Board Member and President.

T.J. Harms

About T.J.

Mr. T.J. Harms is ACTAR accredited and is the IAARS representative to the ACTAR Board of Directors.  Mr. Harms started a career in Law Enforcement in 1998 where he worked for the Idaho State Police as a Trooper until 2004.  From 2004 to present Mr. Harms works for the Boise Police Department and currently is assigned as a Collision Reconstructionist and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer.  Mr. Harms oversees the Boise Police Departments Major Crash team and instructs officers in collision investigation.
